America Keeps Getting Fatter




Vacationing in Palm Springs, I dropped in on a local mall searching for a bite to eat. All the mall stores were either empty or had at most one or two people shopping. Ditto for the sushi restaurant, delicatessan, and roast-chicken stand. But one area of the mall had a line snaking around two walls, with customers patiently waiting up to an hour to be served. The much-desired destination: The Cheesecake Factory. 'Nuff said.
