Avoid a Memorial Day Meltdown
Well, the first holiday weekend of summer (is it really summer?-it still feels like winter!) is upon us. Overpriced beach houses in the Hamptons and Fire Island are opening for the season. Massive quantities of good food and liquor are being purchased by thoughtful hosts and hostesses as I write this column. The only thing worse than driving back into the city after a blowout holiday weekend is to return to your house or apartment five pounds heavier. Here are some strategies to keep you on the thin and narrow this Memorial Day Weekend.

Stay at least five feet away from the pastry basket!

Starting your morning with a sugary, fat-laden pastry or sweet roll will not only weigh you down, but it will also make you crave additional sweets and fats all day long. Instead, have a bowl of a low-sugar, high-fiber cereal, such as Post Shredded Wheat, topped with fresh fruit and skim milk. In the mood for eggs? You could also have a scrumptious omelet with mushrooms, onions, or any of your favorite vegetables. You can even add a little cheese to the omelet, if you want to be a little naughty. Just remember, a New York-style bagel has a minimum of 600-700 calories before it is even dressed up. If you must have bread, have a piece of whole wheat toast with your cereal or eggs. No jam please.

Don't go nuts for nuts

There are few foods that are more calorie dense or fatty than a bowl of mixed nuts. Yes, they go great with cocktails. But aren't we being a little lenient already by letting you have a cocktail or two? Why add insult to injury. Of course, I would never dream of going without my beloved Apple Martinis this weekend. Sixpack abs be damned!

Go lean protein for dinner

Assuming the weather cooperates, barbecues and grills should be running at full force this weekend. Take full advantage. Grilled chicken or fish is not only tasty and filling, but it will keep you feeling light as air for that spin on the dancefloor later in the evening.

Have your cake, but only eat half!

If your pushy, zaftig host or hostess insists that you have a piece of their one-of-a-kind confectionary delight, don't disappoint him or her. (After all, you were able to score a free holiday weekend at their expense!) Just split the sugar poison with a friend, or better yet, significant other. This way, the hostess is happy, and you also do not feel deprived. A little sugary junk every now and then will not kill your diet dreams, I promise.

Have a great weekend!!!
