Goodbye, Dr. Atkins

Robert Atkins, the popular and controversial diet guru, died today from injuries sustained from a fall on an icy Manhattan sidewalk. It really has been such a cruel winter in so many ways. I remember first going on the high-fat, no-carb, Atkins diet when I was twelve years old during the summer of 1978. I attended a tennis camp that summer, and I managed to drop a good 20 pounds on the diet. Unfortunately, once you start eating carbohydrates again (which just about everybody who follows the diet eventually does) the weight comes back lightning fast. Interestingly, the Atkins diet was not very popular in the 80's or 90's. It really only started to have a Cher-like comeback once the whole fat-free craze was exposed to be a major fraud. What is Susan Powter up to these days, by the way? Dr. Atkins was on the money that Americans consume far too much sugar and refined, calorie-dense, carbohydrates. But the solution is not to substitute fat for the sugars. Calories are calories, and there is no such thing as a free lunch, at least as far as your thighs are concerned.

Happy Easter and Passover everybody!
