Picking A Good Trainer
Is it just me, or does it feel like this winter has been going on for twenty years? I can't remember the last time the temperature hovered above 50 degrees in the city; was it before the Vietnam war? One of the few negative aspects about losing weight is that you become far more sensitive to the cold. All that fat around your midsection does provide some warmth. The last two winters in New York have been incredibly mild, making these brutally cold days even more uncomfortable for me. Or maybe I'm just getting old? Naah, it can't be that! At least February will soon be history.
Anyway, the point of this entry is not for me to bitch incessantly about the cold; it's to help you pick out a good trainer. Even hardcore weightlifters should seek the guidance of an experienced professional from time to time. When I joined New York Sport's Club last month, the membership package included a complimentary training session. The trainer, an ex-marine, noticed that my form on the tricep pulldown and leg-press machine could use some improvement. It just proved that beginners are not the only ones that can benefit from the assistance of a trainer. Although I did not sign up for a package of training sessions at this time, I fully intend to do so at some point in the future.
A GOOD TRAINER
(1) Motivates you to exercise harder and longer (2) Encourages you to attempt interesting and challenging new routines (3) Infuses you with positive energy (4) Listens to your needs and goals (5) Does not end sessions abrupty to rush to the next client (6) Has the patience of a saint
A BAD TRAINER
(1) Gets annoyed at being asked too many questions (2) Shaves time off your session (3) Ignores your discomfort during certain exercises (4) Cancels at the last minute (5) Cannot remember your name (6) Makes you wish you were exercising by yourself
Neely O' Hara (from the 1967 camp-classic movie, Valley of the Dolls) had more than her share of bad publicity, and believe me, I've had more than my share of bad trainers over the years! This is why it is crucial for you to AUDITION as many trainers as necessary before you sign up for a package deal. If the chemistry does not feel right with a certain trainer, do not allow yourself to be pressured into continuing with him or her. Remember, its your money and, more importantly, your body at stake!
