Choosing a Gym: Location! Location! Location!
The best gym in the world ain't worth a damn if you don't set foot in it regularly. So, before you plunk down your hard-earned money for a new gym membership, make sure that it is thisclose to your office or apartment.
I was a member of the tony Reebok Sports Club for a year. I was seduced by the luxurious amenities, such as free crushed ice and designer shampoos in the lockerroom. It was also amusing to watch Regis Philbin work out in a tight tanktop. One night, I found myself sharing the elevator with Puff Daddy, (excuse me, P. Diddy) and his phalanx of bodyguards. But the gym was a good five minute walk from my apartment, making it a daily struggle to get my ass motivated to go during this sub-zero winter. And despite, Reebok's more than $2,000-a year price tag, the gym is oddly light in the free-weight department. More often than not, I had to cool my heels waiting for one of the three available bench presses. Reebok has basketball courts, a rock climbing wall, a large olympic-style swimming pool, and aerobic classes galore-none of which I ever used! Lesson: Glamour becomes less attractive when it is expensive and difficult. This is why Jennifer Lopez (excuse me, J.Lo) will likely never stay married for long.
I am currently a proud member of the New York Sport's Club. The lockerrooms are designed for anorexic pygmies and the amenities are few and far between. But with multiple Manhattan locations, I now have access to gyms close to both my apartment and work at half the price. LIFE IS GOOD. I will miss looking at Regis in his tanktop, though.
